Sustainable Studio
Cardiff
The Sustainable Studio is an inspiring environment for creative and collaborative people, located in an old industrial warehouse in the heart of Cardiff. They provide private studios or just a desk to park your laptop for a day, all of the studios are made from reclaimed wood and other previously loved materials. It’s an inspiring space to work, relax and do something amazing with a group of like-minded individuals.

We worked with Sustainable Studio to develop an expansion of their existing studio space, proposed that the 2nd floor would accommodate ‘work pods’, communal area and other activities that promote a collective atmosphere.

My design concept for the work pods was to bring colour and vibrancy to the warehouse but still maintaining their love for reclaimed and low-cost materials. The second floor space had limited natural light, therefore the work pods were designed to allow as much light in as possible. The roof of the work pod consisted of 3 poly-carbonate panels and 1 OSB (oriented strand board) to allow maximum natural light through. However to maintain the privacy within the pods, OSB has been cut and arranged geometrically on each side. The Frame work within the pods is made from natural square ended timber (4×4). Graphics have been added to the exterior to introduce colour and individuality to each pod.

Thanks to incredible supporters, Sustainable Studios, were able to hit there target and raised £10,272 to help in the renovation of the second floor. Due to this support they have started work on the upstairs space last month and have since sanded floors, fire proofed walls, cleaned, filled holes and painted walls.
